PhotoMichi JapanJapan Camera Buying Guide

Bring and confirm

  • Bring the passport used to enter Japan; do not assume a copy or phone image is sufficient.
  • Confirm your own eligibility with the store before the transaction.
  • Ask whether the store deducts tax immediately or uses a refund-after-purchase service.
  • Check purchase limits and any waiting period that the retailer applies to cameras and lenses.

Do not confuse tax-free with warranty

A tax-free sale does not automatically include international support. Kitamura's current guidance says its listed manufacturer, five-year, used and international warranties are not included with tax-free camera and lens purchases. Treat this as a store-specific rule and ask for written confirmation for your exact purchase.

Calculate the real saving

Compare the final card charge, refund fees if any, warranty value, return limits and price at home. The tax amount alone does not decide whether the purchase is worthwhile.
